Bedsteads come in all sizes and shapes, not to mention material, we already discussed that so this is no news for our regular readers. In this article I would like to focus mainly on double bedsteads. This means bed frames for such beds as a double bed, a small double bed a king size bed, etc.

Most of these beds are larger beds so the bedstead needs some extra support down the middle of the frame. This is a fact that is irrelevant to the material you use. If this reinforcement is not used, a wooden bedstead might break in the middle and a metal one might start to bend. In any case the bedstead will lose it’s main function and the mattress will not provide you with the best possible comfort any more.

Speaking of double bedsteads I think I should also mention another fun and elegant addition to the bed itself. A bed canopy is coming back. Yes, it is not only a thing of the past, new generations are rediscovering all the positive effects it provides. If the money you might save on heating is not enough of a motivation than think of the romantic possibilities it provides, not to mention you can combine it with a mosquito net. Just put four posts around the bedstead and attach drapes to it.

Considering we spent almost one third of our lives in bed and considering the bedstead is the base of a bed, it is obvious a good quality bedstead is vital. But how to choose the right one? There are different materials, different colours and different styles of making. For those more traditional a wooden (usually pine) bedstead in natural colour will probably be most suitable, while a metal bedstead is usually chosen by those who wish who are mostly looking for a sturdy long term solution, while at the same time having a option to also buy a beautifully decorated cast iron bedstead, which can sometimes be a true work of art.

Bed frames really do come in all possible shapes these days so you will certainly have many different options to choose from. But having too many options is sometimes a bit time consuming so we are preparing a series of buying tips for your future bedsteads and bed frames.

A good bedstead needs a solid mattress

Bedstead is, however, only the very base of the bed. You still need a solid, comfortable mattress to go along with it and together they will form a great bed, a perfect place for you to rest properly. Although this is a site dedicated mostly to bedsteads we feel that we should say a few words about the mattresses as well to help you complete your bed. This is why we are also in the process of building a complete mattress buying guide. It will be ready in a week or so and published right here at bedstead.org.uk. Make sure to bookmark us and check it out when it will be online.

We have also chosen our sponsor as you can see from the banners on the website. Considering we’re a specialized site we have had many offers from various bedstead suppliers, but in the end we have chosen OakFurnitureSolutions.co.uk because we believe they are the best at what they do.

Considering you will spend a fair portion of your life in bed, choosing the right “sleeping equipment” will do wonders for your life and a good bed frame with a solid mattress will do wonders for you. A good night sleep is your base for a successful day because only a well rested body functions properly at work, in school and in your everyday life.

Bedstead and back pain

It is not just about short term effects though. You should start at a very young age and provide your children cabin bed with a solid bedstead. A poor bed will give you long term problems and most of them will not be felt until it is too late. Back pain is the most common problem and very likely the most annoying one too. Although it is somewhat affected by the height of the bedstead (a bed frame that is too low or too high so you have trouble laying down or standing up), it is far more important to invest in a proper mattress. A solid mattress will keep your back straight during the night and because of that you will be more rested in the morning. But keep in mind your body has to adjust, especially if you have a soft mattress now.

In the end it doesn’t really matter whether you have a metal bedstead or even a brass bedstead, because it is all about the proper mattress, not about the proper bed frame.

First of all let’s determine what brass really is. It is an any alloy of zinc and copper and it has a muted yellow color, similar to gold to some proportion. The proportions of both materials may vary to create a wide range of brasses with different properties. The mixture used for making a brass bedstead is usually seventy percent copper and thirty percent zinc, while the mixture may vary a bit between different manufacturers.

Brass bedstead buying? Choose wisely!

Considering brass is a soft type of metal, you really need to be careful about the manufacturer you will choose. There are basically two ways of approaching this issue – choosing an establised bedstead company that has a good reputation of making quality bedsteads, or looking for a small enterpreneur that makes every brass bedstead by hand, but is specialized only in this material. Both ways will probably be expensive, but in the end you will have a quality brass bedstead, unwavering and robust, similar to a metal bedstead, with solid steel-fortification side posts and a solid integrated cast frame system.

Brass bedstead is a unique piece of art

A brass bedstead is usually made for a specific individual costumer and although most manufacturers still follow and respect the traditional type of building these bedsteads, they also implemented some modern aspects. A brass bedstead that is made today is usually a mixture of traditional sturdyness and contemporary design, making it a perfect piece of furniture for anyone and any bedroom. It will cost you more than other types of bedstead, but if you are a luxurious type of a person, you will surely find it worthy.

A metal bedstead or a metal bed frame as many people call it is the most stable of all bedsteads. The build is firm and the entire frame is practically indestructible if manufactured in the righ manner.

Metal bedstead not for you?

It’s hard to determine what type of person is suitable for a metal bedstead because you can connet it to more traditional types of people that bet on the solid build and do not care much about the general look of the bedstead and on the other hand you can also see it under a modern person that knows his fashion and believes a metal bedstead is the latest hip. And you know what? Both of them are right. The way metal bedsteads are built these days gives them both the pleasure of being right. Metal bedsteads have become a bit of a work of art and some pieces are magnificent. So magnificent you sometimes do not want to put a mattress on top of the frame so people could enjoy in slick lines and ornaments in almost microscopic precision that determine the contemporary style of bed frames.

Buying a metal bedstead?

Be careful to buy the right length, metal bedsteads are not flexible and you can not bend them to fit them into a space that is just too small. Also mind that the furniture is contemporary so it suits the bed frame. Sometimes it is better to just go with a leather bedstead or even a brass bedstead that suits your environment a bit better.
